Four theatre companies are sharing one rehearsal hall after rents on their separate rooms rose in the same month. A painted floor plan shows each company’s marks in a different colour, so a morning group does not strike the tape an evening group still needs.
The arrangement runs for a season. A written rota gives each company three calls a week and one silent Sunday for technical work. The Sunday was the clause that nearly broke the deal, because every group believed it was the one that needed quiet most.
What happens next
Storage is the remaining argument. Costumes cannot live in the hall, and two companies have nowhere else. A tailor two streets away has offered a rack in a back room at a price the groups are still dividing.
Audiences will not see a joint production. The companies were clear that sharing a room is not a merger, and that their posters will not start looking like one season by accident.
