A regional film soundtrack is ahead of two national releases on the weekly streaming chart. It was recorded with a live choir in a hall that usually hosts weddings, after the production ran out of money for the larger studio it had booked.

The composer said the room’s echo is audible and was left in. A cleaner mix was tried and rejected because it sounded, in the composer’s words, like a different film. The director agreed, which settled an argument that had gone on for a week.

What happens next

The film itself is still in a limited run. Chart watchers noted that the music has travelled further than the print, which is awkward for the distributors and useful for the singers, who are now being booked for stage versions the film never planned.

A national label asked about a remix. The choir’s contractor said any remix has to keep the singers’ names on the cover, not only in a credit roll nobody reads.
