The city marathon has moved its start line off the bridge approach and into the exhibition ground. Last year the gathering trapped an ambulance on the same road the race was supposed to have cleared.

The new start adds four hundred metres and a wider corral. Elite runners will still cross a marked timing mat, so the extra distance is not part of the official clock. Club runners who treat the gun as the start have been told to expect a slower first kilometre while the field unpacks.

What happens next

Riverfront residents, who lost a Sunday morning to barriers, asked whether the finish would move as well. It will not. The finish stays on the promenade because that is where the medical tent and the broadcast position already have power.

Entries close on Friday. Organisers said they will not add a last-minute charity bib beyond the published cap, after an overspill last year put runners into a lane that marshals had marked as empty.
