The women’s hockey team booked a semi-final with a short-corner in the fourth quarter, four minutes after they had looked content to hold a one-goal lead. The captain said the corner was the plan, not a moment of improvisation.

For most of the third quarter the side defended deep. A forward who usually presses was pulled back to cover a wing that had been leaking. That change, which looked cautious on the sideline, is what produced the turnover that led to the corner.

The goalkeeper, who had not started the tournament, was named player of the match. She kept out a drag flick in the first half that would have levelled the tie and changed the calculation entirely.

The semi-final is on Saturday. The coach asked for a rest day with no optional running, after three matches in eight days left two players with heavy legs in the last ten minutes.
