The swimming federation has opened extra lanes after entries for the winter trials ran past the pool’s evening capacity. Younger age groups will be timed at dawn. Seniors keep the water after five, when officials say the times are more comparable to a championship final.

Parents objected to the dawn slot until the federation showed the alternative: a cut-off by entry date that would have excluded late-developing swimmers who only decided to trial this month. The dawn heat is the compromise.

What happens next

Lane discipline is the other change. A swimmer who misses the reported heat does not get a later one. Last year’s informal re-swims pushed the meet past the building’s closing time and left the last final in tired water.

The pool has hired two additional timekeepers rather than ask coaches to hold a watch on their own athletes. That conflict was written into several complaints last season.
