Onion and tomato prices eased in the wholesale yard after trucks from two producing districts arrived before dawn, the first heavy delivery in three weeks. Retail prices in the city have not fully followed, and traders say that lag is normal for a day or two.

The previous spike was blamed on rain in the growing belt, which kept trucks off the highway rather than destroying the crop. Today’s arrivals were smaller than a normal week but large enough to change the morning auction.

What happens next

Retail associations asked the administration not to announce a crackdown on “hoarding” on a day when the wholesale rate is already falling. They said a raid headline makes shops hold stock back, which is the opposite of what the city needs.

Consumers will see the clearer test at evening markets. If the retail price is still yesterday’s number after two auctions, the market committee has said it will publish both rates on the gate.
