A mid-size bank will open twelve branches in district towns before the quarter ends. These are full-service counters with a cash chest, not the kiosk model the same bank used in city malls.
The chairman said deposit growth in the districts has been steadier than in the metros, and that customers there still want a person at a desk for a first loan. City branches, by contrast, are being consolidated where two sites sit within a kilometre.
What happens next
Local boards have been asked to hire clerical staff from the same district. The bank learned, it said, that a transferred officer who leaves after a year takes the relationships with them.
Eight of the twelve towns already have a public-sector branch on the main road. The new sites are planned for the market street, closer to the grain shops that still do a large share of the day’s cash business.
