The weather office has released a flood map for riverside neighbourhoods that marks streets rather than whole wards. Residents had complained that a ward-level colour painted dry lanes and wet lanes the same shade, which taught people to ignore it.

The map refreshes when the river gauge crosses a published line. It does not try to predict a particular alley. Officials were plain about that limit: a blocked drain can flood a street the river never reaches, and this map is not a drain map.

What happens next

Municipal engineers will use the same picture when they decide where to park pumps for the night. Last year the pumps followed phone complaints, which meant the first caller’s lane was cleared and the next lane waited.

The file is on the weather office site and on a board at the two riverside police posts. A paper copy matters, the office said, because the afternoon the map is most useful is also the afternoon the network is busiest.
