The central public library has started lending tablets for an evening coding class, with a condition that surprised nobody who works the desk: the tablets do not leave the building. Learners go home with a printed exercise.
The librarian said earlier experiments with take-home devices ended with cracked screens and a waiting list that never cleared. An in-room set can be charged, counted and ready for the next group at seven.
What happens next
The class is taught by two volunteers from a nearby college and is capped at sixteen. Places went first to readers who already use the library’s job-search hour, on the argument that the same people are trying to add a skill employers actually ask for.
A second evening will be added if attendance stays above twelve for a month. The library will not, it said, turn the tablet shelf into a general internet café.
