A group of city schools has agreed a common rule on phones from next term. Devices go into a pouch at the classroom door during lessons and come back at the final bell. The point of doing it together, heads said, is that parents can no longer answer “the other school allows it”.
The rule is for lesson time, not for the journey. Several heads resisted a total ban on the commute after parents argued that a phone is how they know a child has boarded the right bus.
What happens next
Teachers asked for one exception: a lesson that uses a phone as the tool, which must be written into the plan beforehand. A standing exception, they said, would collapse back into everyday use within a month.
Students in the senior classes described the pouch as fair if it is actually collected. Their objection was to rules that exist on a noticeboard and not at the door.
