City gardeners held the first of two seed swaps before the winter planting window. It is a table in the park, not a sale. The only rule is a label. A packet without a name and a month does not go on the table.

The useful trades, veterans said, are the dull ones: coriander that actually germinates, a bean that tolerates the shade of a balcony wall. Rare flowers draw a crowd and then disappoint in a pot. The organisers put the practical packets at the front for that reason.

What happens next

A municipal gardener attended and answered questions without running a stall. The park’s own nursery is short of stock and did not want to imply that the swap was an official distribution.

The second swap is in a fortnight, closer to the date most people actually sow. The first one, organisers admitted, was early for planting and right for reminding people the date exists.
