A neighbourhood reading room has added a children’s hour on Sundays. It is a read-aloud, not a homework session. Parents wait in the corridor. The volunteer who runs it said an adult in the circle changes what a child is willing to ask.
The books are from the room’s own shelves plus a small grant that bought picture books in two languages spoken on the street. A parent committee chose the second language. The room refused to guess.
What happens next
Attendance on the first Sunday was eighteen children and a rug that was too small. A furnishing shop has offered a larger rug. The room accepted it on the condition that it can be rolled away before the evening adult session, which uses the same floor.
There is a waiting list for the volunteer slot and not for the children. The organiser would like that fact reversed before the month is out.
