The state capital has tightened the rule on campaign loudspeakers. From tonight, police may seize a set that is still running after midnight without waiting for a fresh written complaint from a resident.

The order follows a week in which three residential colonies recorded the same party song on a loop past 1 a.m. Station houses had been telling callers to come in the morning with a form. Senior officers said that practice made the rule meaningless on the night it was broken.

What happens next

Campaign managers called the change abrupt. They said street meetings often start late because candidates are still in another ward, and that a hard midnight cut will push events into lanes where monitoring is weaker.

The police commissioner posted a phone number for on-duty inspectors and asked resident associations to share one contact per colony, so officers are not hunting for a complainant while the speaker is still on.
