Coastal towns have revised evacuation maps before cyclone season. Residents who were previously sent to a community hall are now directed to schools on higher ground. The hall flooded in the last storm while people were still inside it.
Ward officers are walking the routes this week with a copy of the map, because a line on a poster is useless if the lane it names is now a construction site. Two routes have already been redrawn for that reason.
What happens next
Fishermen’s groups asked that boats be included in the plan, not only people. The administration agreed to open the safer inlet six hours earlier than the general order, so boats are not trying to enter as the road evacuation begins.
Sirens will be tested on Sunday at noon. Officials asked residents to treat the test as a test, and to treat any siren that is not on the published calendar as real.
