A reader wrote to the desk with a request that should not have needed writing. Tell us who benefits before you tell us who announced it. The letter named three stories from this month. In each, the first paragraph was a minister and the beneficiary appeared, if at all, below the fold.
The reader is right about the order. An announcement is a beginning. It tells us that a person with a microphone has chosen a sentence. It does not tell us whose rent changes, whose queue shortens, whose contract is in the annexure. We have been leading on the microphone because the microphone is available at a press conference and the annexure is available later. Later is not a reason.
What happens next
This does not mean the announcement is fake. It means the announcement is incomplete, and an incomplete thing should not be dressed as a finished report. We can say what was said and, in the same breath, say what we do not yet know about who gains.
The letter is now pinned above the editing table. That is a small gesture. The test will be Thursday’s lead. If the first sentence is still the title of the speaker and not the effect of the decision, the letter will have been decoration. Decoration is the habit we are trying to break.
